CROSS LANE - Walney Island

Cross Lane takes it's name from exactly what it suggests, the fact that it crosses from the East to West coast of Walney. The lane crosses the island at it's thinnest point and has been relocated a number of occasions to accommodate the ever shifting landfill site/s, as has it's counter part; Honey Pot Lane...

Just to the North of Cross Lane was where the skeleton of a sailor was discovered during the early 1980's. There is no reason to be alarmed at this find, other lane the fact that it proves the rate at which the islands west coast line itself is eroding. In times not long long 100's of years ago, rather than thousands, sailors that died aboard a vessel were rowed ashore by other crew and buried a couple of fields inland, and that's what had occurred here.
